About Us
Dedicated to improving healthcare at Harare Central Hospital since 2016
Our Story
Founded in 2016, the Friends of Harare Central Hospital (FHCH) is a UK-based voluntary organisation committed to enhancing the physical and mental wellbeing of patients at Harare Central Hospital—as well as supporting retired HCH-affiliated professionals now living in the UK.
Our mission is driven by the provision of essential equipment, resources, and advocacy to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes. FHCH is proudly made up of healthcare professionals who trained, worked, or maintain strong ties to Harare Central Hospital. United by a shared vision, we aim to change the narrative and uplift the standards of care at one of Zimbabwe's most vital medical institutions.
About Harare Central Hospital
Harare Central Hospital, also known as Gomo Hospital and now officially named Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, is the second-largest public hospital in Zimbabwe, following Parirenyatwa Hospital.
Strategically located in Harare, it serves as the primary referral center for patients and emergencies from the northern regions of the country. It also functions as the main healthcare facility for residents of Greater Harare.
The hospital was officially inaugurated on 2 May 1958, and since 1966, it has played a pivotal role in medical education. It serves as the principal teaching hospital for the University of Zimbabwe's Faculty of Medicine, offering hands-on clinical training to medical students.
Sally Mugabe Central Hospital is fully accredited by the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA) for surgical training. Beyond medical education, it also provides professional training for a wide range of healthcare roles.
